A great reminder! I reread Gift from the Sea every couple of years — sometimes at the beach and sometimes when it feels far away. It never fails to settle my spirit and help me bring some clarity to my writing and living.
Thank you for this gift! I was talking with someone today about how I love learning about other people from the past who have lived beautiful creative lives, where they have asked the questions & considered their space in the world. This right here is exactly what I love about it!! Off to find the book & purchase it if at all possible.
Thank you for this post. Gift From The Sea is a longtime favourite and one I return to regularly. So lovely to see it has inspired you and so many of your readers as well.
Hi Nicole, Thanks for this message and for reminding me about Gift from the Sea. It’s one of those books that has spoken to me through various stages of my life—even before I became a mother. I tend to return to it about every decade or so, and I think it’s time to pick it back up again. Timeless.
I haven’t but would love to read some of her poetry. I was really drawn to the contemplative and lyrical quality of Gift from the Sea. She lived such a storied life.
Oh boy, this is such a relevant post, Nicole! It’s one reason why I love history - it reminds me that our generation is not particularly unique in grappling with human problems. I eschewed social media years ago and am much better off for it but also I’m in my 60s and introverted so “connecting” with piles of people is not my thing anyway. I’m beginning to see the blessing of DT’s being elected: it has given me permission to disengage from the noise, to put distance between me and all the stuff that wants to pull me away from me.

I found this book somewhat by accident last year and have been delighted to hear from so many that it's one they often revisit.

I think you'll be able to find it! A local bookstore could order it for you, and it's available online too.
Adding this book to my TBR list for later this year. Looking forward to another walk at the lake once this weather passes.
For sure!

I discovered her a bit by accident but am glad I did! Have you read any of her other books?

She did! I'm planning to read her biography this summer.

Thanks, as always, for your thoughtful posts.
That's what I've been hearing from so many creatives, that we're more resolved to dig deep and do our work.
